The massive pumpkin sculpture at the Bronx Zoo is designed and carved by Pumpkin Sculpt USA to bring public attention to the organization 96 Elephants. Every day 96 African elephants are shot down for their ivory and the aim is to support the legislation and to save and protect them.

These pieces are created by the experienced designers Sue Beatrice, Andy Gertler, Jenn Cook and Julia Jankowski. It took 18 hours from start to finish to finish the sculpture. The group of artists transform Halloween pumpkins into fine art. Pumpkin carving is a dynamic and voluntary activity through which huge, remarkable creations are made as eye-catchers for special occasions and festivals.

For three days (since Friday), four sculptors carve Halloween pumpkins at the Bronx Zoo. If you’re around, stop by The Dancing Crane Pavilion and check out the exhibit – it will blow your mind. Lots of amazing pumpkins can be seen on Halloween this year. These master artists are happy to share their knowledge, technique and photos, so take the opportunity to admire them.

You may have heard of one of these artists before. All of them take part in various TV shows, newspaper sections and are easy to find on the net. We’re talking about Ray Illafane, Sue Beatrice and Andy Gertler. They’re performing artists in a variety of mediums, but when October comes they turn their attention to Halloween. Sue and Andy often work together on different projects and Sue also works with Ray Villafane in the Villafane Studio. Both and other talented artists like Andy Bergholtz and Chris Vierra master innovative pumpkin structures with giant, record-breaking pumpkins.
