The term gentleman’s room has been known since the 19th century, but probably for a long time. Nowadays there are various ways of interpreting this one strange word, but all of them indicate that the man always needed a space where he could withdraw. I am sure you would say right away that the need to backtrack is not gender-related and we would agree with you. But if we are honest, we women find our ways to mark the territory as our own and when that becomes too much for the man, he intuitively looks for possibilities and places where he can be sure that these specific spots are only belongs to him. You probably haven’t wondered why your husband spends so much time in the garage or basement. The answer is simple – there he will find the said chance to feel himself as a man and if he could do that too, to live out his “typically male” passions undisturbed.

The man’s room is now also known as Man’s Cave 

Many, many years ago, when the social roles of men and women were clearly defined, there were certain topics that only interested women and men, respectively. This interest made the emergence of gentleman’s clubs possible. In the middle-class houses, the men had what was known as a gentleman’s room, where even women were not allowed to enter.

Even if it’s just a basketball hoop, treat him to it 

Even today, many men have the need to exchange ideas with other men and / or just let the air out (both literally and figuratively) and therefore they long for a room where they can store all their treasures and every now and then to celebrate the little joys of being a man in their way. That could be a home fitness studio or a room where they work on pieces of music, home cinema with all the trimmings or just a TV where you can watch the Bundesliga (or whatever you love) live with friends.
